Ask your guide: are the elephants walked in the forest or similar natural environment?
If an elephant is able to walk in its natural environment, foraging along the way with an optional dip in the river, this will be a more enriching and pleasant experience for him or her.
If an elephant is forced to walk the same short route multiple times, or on hot concrete or ground with no shade or natural foliage to forage on, they may become bored and frustrated. This could lead to illness or 'naughty' behaviour, forcing the keeper to use heavy-handed 'training' techniques or equipment such as the bull-hook.
A walk under the canopy of dense forest or in an open grassland is ideal for an elephant.
