Ask your guide: do the elephants forage for food as they would naturally in the wild?
Wild Asian elephants eat around 150 different plant species, with 70% of their diet consisting of grasses, largely bamboo.
As vegetation provides few nutrients, elephants will spend up to 18 hours a day feeding. By comparison, most elephant tourist camps bulk-feed their eles high sugar fruits such as pineapple, sugar cane and bananas.
These foods are not an adequate long-term diet for such a large mammal with complex metabolic demands.
